Functions

Mangrove landscaping and management is recommended as a way of preserving sufficient mangrove environment to minimize adverse impact on the marine communities, whilst allowing scenic development of the area to take place

Large-scale clearing of mangrove forests can permanently alter fish and invertebrate populations of the surrounding reefs.

Mangrove Landscaping Offers:

  • Restoring Damaged Coral Reefs
  • Restoring Marine Habitats
  • Creating New Habitats
  • Beach Protection
  • Scuba Diving
  • Aqua Tourism
  • Education
  • Aquaculture
  • Fishery Nurseries

Application

Replanting mangroves is widely done across the globe, usually as a means of increasing coastal protection or of regenerating mangrove areas that have been destroyed as a result of deforestation, land reclamation, pollution & manmade activities.

Mangroves protect shorelines from damaging storm and hurricane winds, waves, and floods. They also help prevent erosion by stabilizing sediments with their tangled root systems. They maintain water quality and clarity, filtering pollutants and trapping sediments originating from land.

Set ups of different sizes of Mangrove Forest patches can be created in order to enhance the coastal vegetation and balance the ecosystem in the required project areas

Getting Involved

Leaf Global Environmental Services Environment recognizes the importance of mangroves in the ecosystem of the Kingdom.

Leaf Global Environmental Services,a pioneer in environmental rehabilitation and restoration of coastal resources, has been involved in major mangrove transplanting schemes within KSA and have transplanted an excess of 600,000 seedlings.

Leaf Global Environmental Services's mangrove nursery in Dhahban, is serviced by quality sea and fresh water and is securely fenced to prevent grazing by stray animals.

The nursery is equipped with automated water sprinklers and fold-back roofs to allow "hardening-off" of plants.

Dhahban Mangrove Nursery

Huta's purpose built Nursery in Dhahban has an initial capacity of 1,000,000 plants. The saplings are maintained for 6 to 8 months in the nursery under simulated conditions and as such they develop a well established root system that provides them with high survival rates when compared to the direct dibbling of seeds/propagules.

Step 1 - Seeds Harvesting

All of our plants are sourced from seeds that are sustainably harvested from Leaf Global Environmental Services's established Mangrove plantations along the shoreline of Saudi Arabia.

A thorough visual inspection of the seeds condition is undertaken by our agronomists prior to the harvesting process

Step 2 - Seeds Storing

Seeds are inspected to establish maturity, health condition and ensure that they are free from infestation and/or physical injury. Seeds are collected and temporary stored in temperature controlled environment until the germination process commences.

Step 3 - Potting

Upon germination, the seedlings are potted into plastic bags and placed in Leaf Global Environmental Services's modern greenhouse designed to protect them from harsh weather while allowing access to light and ventilation. Here the newly planted seeds are watered twice daily until the commencement of the hardening period.

Step 4 - Watering 4 Month Old Mangrove Seedlings

Drip lines and soaker hoses are used to maintain the moisture within the nursery. For hardening the seedlings; brackish seawater is introduced in the watering regime in order to ease their acclimatisation to the harsh field environment.

Step 5 - Watering 5 Month Old Mangrove Seedlings

Fresh water utilisation is gradually being reduced and seawater is introduced slowly. Salinity concentrations is set to be 25ppt at this stage and is incrementally being increased.

Step 6 - Hardening 7 Month Old Mangrove Seedlings

Upon hardening, the seedlings are graded according to their height and maturity and are reared further until being transported to the outplanting field.

Step 7 - Planting Field Hardening

The seedlings are then transported to the outplanting fields for further hardening prior to transplantation

Step 8 - Site Preparation

Leaf Global Environmental Services's team of experienced workforce preparing the potting holes to receive the Transplants

Areas where native Mangrove stands, wildings & propagules are present suggest a well established substrate and are offering prime planting conditions.

Step 9 - Transplanting Of Avicennia Marina

The seedlings are planted in holes of the same size or slightly larger than their root balls and only deep enough so that the top of the root ball is flush or only slightly below ground.

Transplanted Area - Overview

Precautions are taken to ensure that the top of the root ball does not protrude above, nor is more than 2 inches below normal ground, as the seedlings may rot.

Transplanting Of Avicennia Marina Area

The planting holes are then tightly sealed around the plant so as to prevent the plant from wobbling and to close air pockets around the roots.

Environmental Factors, Maintenance & Aftercare

Environmental factors, including temperature, salinity and rainfall are important key determinants that have a strong influence over the growth, survival and distribution of mangroves.

Frequent changes in climatic conditions, oceanographic regimes, hydrogeology & Eco hydrology conditions and manmade causes disturb and hinder the survival and growth rate of the mangrove plants.

It is absolutely essential for maintenance & after care programs to be implemented for any new transplanting efforts so as to ensure minimization of the expected losses.

Allocating time and resources for monitoring is a key component of a successful mangrove transplanting.
